Linux CLI and vi cheatsheet

Most of the time I am working on the command line to access my home server using ssh / scp, and using vi to edit files. This will be handy as a reference guide for the Linux commands and also for navigating vi.

ssh and scp - my most used commands

ssh & scp are my most used commands once I started playing around with my homeserver.

ssh I use it to login remotely to the server, issuing a command like this -

ssh username@SERVERIP -p PORTNUM

For security measures, I have disabled root logins and changed the default port 22 to something else. Those settings are configurable under this file -

and look for the PermitRootLogin and Port entries respectively.

Hugo Cheatsheet

Markdown is the language used by Hugo. Markdown files have an extension of .md for it to be processed by Hugo.

This is what I am using as reference for basic Markdown language.

Goodbye Uptime!

It’s been a week since I built the home server, and so far here is the uptime -

But I have to pull the plug, as I have additional hardware (all donations) coming in the way. I’ve got 2 more incoming laptops and my existing surge protector only has 1 more free outlet, it can’t accomodate 2 more laptops.

Apache Logs

After merely a few hours that my site is up and running, I decided to check the apache logs to see if there are any suspicious activities. Scouring through the log files, everything looks normal except for these entries - - - [23/Nov/2017:04:42:23 -0500] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 8499 "-" "masscan/1.0" - - [23/Nov/2017:04:42:24 -0500] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 8499 "-" "masscan/1.0" - - [23/Nov/2017:04:42:25 -0500] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 8499 "-" "masscan/1.0" - - [23/Nov/2017:04:42:25 -0500] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 400 226 "-" "masscan/1.0" - - [23/Nov/2017:04:42:26 -0500] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 8499 "-" "masscan/1.0" - - [23/Nov/2017:04:42:31 -0500] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 8499 "-" "-" - - [23/Nov/2017:04:42:33 -0500] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 8499 "-" "masscan/1.0" - - [23/Nov/2017:04:42:34 -0500] "GET /index.php HTTP/1.1" 404 207 "-" "-" - - [23/Nov/2017:04:42:34 -0500] "HEAD /manager/html HTTP/1.0" 404 - "-" "-"

First Post!

Mandatory first post! After so many trial and errors, finally I got a working skeleton for my site. Still a long way to go and still a lot to learn. I’m doing this without prior HTML experience, just reading along the documentation of Hugo and Markdown.

Initially I opted to use WordPress, again. I had a WordPress server way back when I’m still in the Philippines but gave up on it because it was slow. Since I had a short stint on WordPress, I decided to give it a try again. I had all the requirements for WordPress on my homeserver and able to install it without major issues.
